iPhone 18 Pro Lineup and Fold Could Share A20 Pro, 12GB RAM, and Apple C2 Modem

iPhone 18 Pro Lineup and Fold Could Share A20 Pro, 12GB RAM, and Apple C2 Modem

Apple may be moving toward a more unified premium iPhone strategy in 2026. According to analyst Jeff Pu, the company’s high-end models—including the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and its first foldable—are expected to share the same core silicon and memory configuration.

If accurate, this would mark one of Apple’s most standardized flagship tiers in years.

One Chip to Rule the Premium Tier

Pu’s research note indicates all three premium models will feature the A20 Pro chip, built on TSMC’s 2-nanometer (N2) process and using WMCM packaging.

That means:

  • iPhone 18 Pro
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max
  • iPhone 18 Fold

…could all deliver similar top-tier performance.

This approach would simplify Apple’s high-end stack while ensuring consistent AI and performance capabilities across its most expensive devices.

12GB RAM Standardized for AI

To support advanced on-device AI, Apple is reportedly standardizing memory at 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM across the Pro models and the Fold.

This is significant because:

  • Apple Intelligence features are becoming more demanding
  • Multitasking workloads continue to grow
  • Competitors are pushing higher memory tiers

By aligning memory across the premium lineup, Apple ensures the Fold doesn’t feel underpowered relative to traditional Pro models.

Apple’s C2 Modem Expands

The note also reinforces Apple’s modem transition strategy. All three high-end models are expected to ship with the C2 baseband, Apple’s second-generation in-house modem.

This marks another step away from Qualcomm and aligns with previous reports that the C2 would be ready for the 2026 cycle.

Potential benefits include:

  • Better power efficiency
  • Tighter hardware integration
  • More control over future features (including satellite capabilities)

Camera Upgrades Coming to Pro Models

The iPhone 18 Pro (6.3-inch) and Pro Max (6.9-inch) are expected to receive meaningful camera improvements, including:

  • 48MP main camera with variable aperture
  • 48MP periscope telephoto
  • 48MP ultra-wide
  • 18MP front camera

The variable aperture system is especially notable, as it would give the iPhone true mechanical control over light and depth of field rather than relying purely on computational blur.

Dynamic Island Shrinks—But No Under-Display Face ID Yet

Pu expects Apple to further refine the front design with a smaller Dynamic Island in 2026.

However, the report suggests a low likelihood that under-display Face ID will be ready for this generation. That means Apple may continue iterating on the current cutout approach rather than making the full jump to an all-screen front.

What We Know About the iPhone Fold

Pu outlines several early specs for Apple’s foldable:

  • 7.8-inch internal display
  • Cover screen smaller than 5.3 inches
  • Touch ID in the side button (no Face ID)
  • Titanium + aluminum chassis

The shift to side-mounted Touch ID likely reflects Apple’s push to keep the foldable as thin as possible.

Near-Term iPhone Demand Still Strong

Beyond the 2026 roadmap, Pu also raised his near-term outlook. He increased Apple’s Q1 2026 iPhone build forecast from 56 million to 59 million units, citing resilient demand for the iPhone 17 lineup.

At the same time, he trimmed expectations for the broader smartphone market, now projecting roughly a 6% year-over-year decline in 2026.

One major pressure point: memory costs. LPDDR and NAND now account for 20–30% of a smartphone’s bill of materials, forcing some Android makers to cut specs. Pu believes Apple’s scale and supplier leverage will help it outperform even in a tightening market.

The Big Picture

If these projections hold, Apple’s 2026 premium strategy is becoming clear:

  • Unified flagship silicon (A20 Pro)
  • Higher memory baseline (12GB)
  • Expanded in-house connectivity (C2 modem)
  • Incremental but meaningful camera hardware upgrades
  • A foldable positioned as a true peer to Pro models

Rather than fragmenting its high-end lineup, Apple appears to be building a tightly aligned premium stack—one that could make the jump to the foldable era feel much more seamless for buyers.
