iPhone 17 Pro Rumored to Get 8x Optical Zoom, New Pro Camera App, and Extra Camera Controls

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Pro may bring some of the biggest camera upgrades we’ve seen yet—if a new leak shared with MacRumors turns out to be true. According to an anonymous source claiming familiarity with an iPhone 17 Pro commercial shoot by Division Film, Apple could be planning a serious photography and videography push for 2025.

8x Optical Zoom on Telephoto Lens

The tipster suggests the new Telephoto lens will deliver up to 8× optical zoom, a major jump from the current 5× zoom on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Even more exciting, the lens reportedly moves internally, enabling continuous optical zoom across multiple focal lengths—a feature rivaling professional cameras.

A Brand-New Pro Camera App

Apple is said to be developing an advanced camera app for pro users, potentially combining the functionality of top-tier third-party apps like Halide, Kino, and Filmic Pro. It’s unclear if this will be a standalone app or a major upgrade to Final Cut Camera, but the focus appears to be on giving creators more manual control and pro-level tools.

Extra Camera Control Button

The iPhone 17 Pro could also introduce a second Camera Control button on the top edge of the device, complementing the one introduced on iPhone 16 Pro models. This could make one-handed shooting and pro-style setups more convenient.

Other Details From the Leak

  • A new copper-like color option

  • A centered Apple logo on the back

  • Redesigned wide horizontal camera bar for the triple-lens system

  • Rumors of a triple 48MP rear camera system

  • Possible ability to record video from front and rear cameras simultaneously (as tipped by Jon Prosser)

Why It Matters

Apple has been leaning into video and content creation features, and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has already said the iPhone 17 Pro will emphasize cinematic capabilities. These rumored upgrades would put it head-to-head with professional gear for both photographers and filmmakers.
