Apple Unveils AirPods Max 2 With H2 Chip, USB-C, and Lossless Audio

Apple has officially introduced the second generation of its premium over-ear headphones. The new AirPods Max 2 bring Apple’s H2 chip to the lineup for the first time, along with stronger noise cancellation, new intelligent audio features, and tools designed specifically for creators.

The updated model keeps the same premium design as the original AirPods Max but introduces major internal upgrades that bring it closer to the rest of Apple’s modern audio ecosystem.

H2 Chip Powers Stronger Noise Cancellation

The biggest upgrade inside AirPods Max 2 is the addition of Apple’s H2 chip. This chip powers a new computational audio system that improves several core listening features.

Apple says Active Noise Cancellation is now up to 1.5 times more effective than on the original AirPods Max. The new algorithm focuses especially on blocking low-frequency sounds like airplane engines, traffic noise, and other environmental hums.

Transparency mode has also been redesigned to sound more natural. Instead of heavily processed external audio, the new system lets users stay aware of their surroundings while maintaining a more realistic sound profile.

Adaptive Audio and Intelligent Listening Features

With the H2 chip, AirPods Max 2 now support the same intelligent listening features found in Apple’s newer earbuds.

Adaptive Audio dynamically blends noise cancellation and transparency depending on the environment. If background noise increases, the headphones automatically adjust to block it. When surroundings become quieter, transparency levels increase.

Conversation Awareness is also included. When users begin speaking to someone nearby, the headphones automatically lower media volume and reduce background noise so the conversation can be heard clearly.

For calls, Voice Isolation focuses on the user’s voice while filtering out surrounding sounds.

Apple has also introduced Siri Interactions, allowing users to respond to notifications privately. Instead of speaking a command, users can nod their head to confirm or shake their head to decline certain prompts.

Other intelligent features include Personalized Volume, which learns listening habits over time and adjusts audio levels automatically, and Loud Sound Reduction, which actively lowers sudden environmental noise spikes.

Live Translation With Apple Intelligence

One of the most interesting additions is Live Translation, powered by Apple Intelligence.

When paired with an iPhone running iOS 26, the headphones can translate in-person conversations between different languages in real time. The feature is designed for travel, meetings, and casual conversations with people who speak different languages.

This addition brings the AirPods Max lineup in line with features already available in the latest AirPods Pro models.

USB-C Enables Lossless Audio for Creators

Apple is also targeting creators and professionals with the updated hardware.

AirPods Max 2 now feature a USB-C port, allowing the headphones to support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio when connected using the included cable.

This wired connection provides extremely low latency, which is important for musicians, audio engineers, and video editors.

Apple says users can mix music using Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking inside apps like Logic Pro. The company also introduced a studio-quality recording mode, designed to help podcasters and vocalists capture more detailed vocal recordings.

New Features for Photography and Gaming

The Digital Crown on AirPods Max 2 gains a new function as well. It can now act as a camera remote when connected to an iPhone or iPad.

Pressing the crown allows users to snap photos or start and stop video recording without touching their device.

Gamers will also benefit from reduced wireless audio latency. When Game Mode is active on iOS or macOS, the headphones deliver more responsive sound for gameplay.

Pricing and Availability

AirPods Max 2 maintain the same $549 price as the original model.

Apple is offering the headphones in five color options: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.

Pre-orders begin Wednesday, March 25, with retail availability and first deliveries expected to start in early April.

With the addition of the H2 chip, USB-C connectivity, and creator-focused features like lossless audio and studio recording capabilities, the second-generation AirPods Max represent Apple’s most advanced over-ear headphones yet.
