Apple Testing Variable Aperture and Large-Aperture Telephoto for iPhone 18 Pro
Share
Apple is reportedly experimenting with major camera upgrades for the iPhone 18 Pro, with supply chain sources pointing to new hardware that could significantly improve how the device handles light and depth.
According to fresh leaks, Apple engineers are evaluating both a variable aperture main camera and a new large-aperture telephoto lens—a combination that could mark one of the biggest optical changes to the iPhone in years.

Variable Aperture: A Big Shift for iPhone Photography
The latest details come from leaker Digital Chat Station, who says Apple is testing a configuration that includes:
- A variable aperture mechanism on the main wide-angle camera
- A high-performance telephoto module with a larger aperture
A variable aperture system uses a mechanical iris—similar to what you’d find in professional cameras—to physically adjust the size of the lens opening. That allows the sensor to control how much light enters the camera.
Why that matters:
- More natural background blur (true optical depth of field)
- Improved low-light performance
- Better exposure control in challenging lighting
- Less reliance on computational simulation
Up to now, Apple has leaned heavily on software to simulate depth effects for Portrait Mode. A mechanical aperture would allow for more realistic results straight from the hardware.
Telephoto Upgrade Also in the Works
The report also mentions a new large-aperture telephoto module. A wider aperture on a zoom lens would:
- Allow more light to reach the sensor
- Improve detail retention at higher zoom levels
- Enhance low-light zoom photography
Earlier rumors were split on whether the variable aperture would debut on the main lens or the periscope telephoto (especially on the Pro Max model). This new leak suggests Apple may be testing multiple configurations before locking in final hardware.
Part of a Bigger 2026 Refresh
These camera upgrades are expected to arrive with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup in 2026. The devices are rumored to feature:
- A 2-nanometer A20 chip
- Up to 12GB of RAM
- Apple’s in-house C2 modem
The move to 2nm silicon would be critical for powering advanced imaging features while maintaining efficiency and thermal performance.
Competition Is Heating Up
The leak also frames Apple’s testing within a broader industry push. Android and HarmonyOS manufacturers are reportedly working on enhanced front sensors and imaging systems aimed at outperforming the iPhone.
If Apple follows through with both a variable aperture and a larger-aperture telephoto lens, the iPhone 18 Pro could represent a meaningful leap in optical hardware—not just incremental camera tweaks.
We’re still more than a year away from launch, but the direction is clear: Apple appears to be doubling down on real, mechanical camera improvements alongside computational photography.
