Apple Shelves Second-Generation iPhone Air After Weak Sales of Original Model

Apple has reportedly paused development of the second-generation iPhone Air, just months after launching the ultra-thin smartphone to underwhelming demand. According to a new report from The Information, Apple has notified suppliers that the device has been removed from its production roadmap for next fall, though the project has not been canceled outright.
Production Lines Shut Down as Demand Falters
The report says Foxconn has already dismantled nearly all of its iPhone Air production lines, with a full halt expected by the end of November. Another supplier, Luxshare, reportedly ended its production runs in late October.
The move comes after a series of supply chain reports — including from Nikkei Asia and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo — indicated that Apple was slashing orders for the iPhone Air amid softer-than-expected demand. Kuo previously warned that most suppliers would cut capacity by over 80% by early 2026.
A Costly Lesson for Apple’s Thinnest iPhone Ever
Unveiled in September, the iPhone Air was positioned as Apple’s thinnest and lightest iPhone to date, a design-focused alternative to the standard iPhone lineup. Early reviews praised its elegant build and sleek profile, but many buyers balked at its $999 starting price and hardware trade-offs, including a single-lens camera and smaller battery.
The result, analysts say, was a device that struggled to find its audience — echoing past efforts like the iPhone mini and iPhone Plus, both of which failed to carve out sustainable niches between Apple’s mainstream and Pro models.
Next-Gen iPhone Air Could Still Emerge in 2027
The now-delayed second-generation iPhone Air was reportedly slated to include a larger battery, dual 48MP camera system, and a vapor chamber cooling setup similar to that found in the iPhone 17 Pro.
With those plans now shelved, Apple’s fall 2026 lineup is expected to focus on the iPhone 18 Pro models and the company’s first foldable iPhone. The standard iPhone 18 and new iPhone 18e are rumored to follow in spring 2027, and one source told The Information that Apple could still revive the iPhone Air 2 for that same spring release window.
A Broader Shift in Apple’s iPhone Strategy
The decision to delay the iPhone Air underscores a broader recalibration in Apple’s product strategy, as the company experiments with new form factors amid a maturing smartphone market.
Industry watchers suggest Apple may now focus its design efforts on the foldable iPhone and the 20th-anniversary iPhone in 2027, which is rumored to feature a completely bezel-less display and under-display Face ID system.
Apple’s Search for the Next Breakout iPhone
For Apple, the iPhone Air’s muted reception may serve as a reminder that design alone isn’t enough to drive excitement in today’s market. As one analyst put it, “The Air was beautiful, but beauty doesn’t sell if it means compromise.”
Whether Apple revives the project or quietly lets it fade, the message seems clear: the future of the iPhone may lie not in getting thinner — but in rethinking the form factor entirely.
