Apple Releases iOS 16.7.15 and iOS 15.8.7 Security Updates for Older Devices

Apple Releases iOS 16.7.15 and iOS 15.8.7 Security Updates for Older Devices

Apple has released new security updates for older iPhones and iPads that no longer support the latest versions of iOS and iPadOS. The company rolled out iOS 16.7.15 and iPadOS 16.7.15, along with iOS 15.8.7 and iPadOS 15.8.7, to patch vulnerabilities and keep legacy devices protected.

These updates are designed for devices that cannot upgrade to Apple’s newest operating systems but still require security maintenance.

iOS 16.7.15 for Devices Running iOS 16

The iOS 16.7.15 and iPadOS 16.7.15 updates carry the build number 20H380 and are available for several older Apple devices that remain compatible with iOS 16.

Supported devices include the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X. The update also covers the fifth-generation iPad as well as the original 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models.

This update follows the recent release of iOS 16.7.14, which addressed a critical issue related to emergency calling in certain regions. With iOS 16.7.15, Apple continues to maintain security coverage for devices that are still widely used but no longer receive major feature updates.

iOS 15.8.7 for Even Older Hardware

Apple also issued iOS 15.8.7 and iPadOS 15.8.7, which carry the build number 19H411. These updates target devices that are limited to iOS 15.

The update supports the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, the first-generation iPhone SE, and the seventh-generation iPod touch. It also includes support for the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 4.

By continuing to release updates for these devices, Apple is extending security protection for hardware that is now several generations old.

Security Fixes Without Detailed Disclosure

Apple’s official release notes for these updates do not list specific vulnerabilities. Instead, the company states that the software provides important security fixes and recommends that users install the updates.

Apple frequently withholds detailed descriptions of vulnerabilities until enough users have installed the patch. This practice helps prevent attackers from exploiting the flaws before devices are updated.

How to Install the Update

Users with compatible devices can install the update over the air. The process can be completed by opening the Settings app, selecting General, and tapping Software Update.

Once the update appears, users can download and install it directly from their device.

Continued Support for Legacy Devices

Apple regularly provides security updates for older hardware even after those devices stop receiving major operating system upgrades. This approach helps extend the lifespan of older iPhones and iPads while protecting users from newly discovered vulnerabilities.

For owners of devices still running iOS 16 or iOS 15, installing the latest security update remains the best way to ensure their device stays protected.
