Apple Prepares M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro Launch as Inventory Tightens

Apple appears to be on the verge of its next major Mac release. With retail inventory thinning out and shipping estimates slipping weeks into the future, new reports suggest Apple could unveil its high-end M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros as soon as this month.

The signs are lining up for a familiar Apple playbook: quiet inventory constraints followed by a sudden product refresh.

M5 Pro and M5 Max Models Tied to macOS 26.3

According to Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, the new MacBook Pro models are closely tied to the macOS 26.3 release cycle, which is expected to land between February and March.

Internally identified as J714 and J716, the upcoming machines are expected to keep the current MacBook Pro design while upgrading the internals to Apple’s more powerful M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. This mirrors Apple’s recent strategy of prioritizing silicon upgrades over exterior redesigns.

Inventory Signals an Imminent Release

Several real-world indicators suggest the launch is close:

  • 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro stock is tightening on Apple’s online store
  • Delivery estimates are now pushing into late February and March
  • Existing models are increasingly hard to find at some retail locations

Gurman adds that the new MacBook Pros have already been staged in shipping warehouses worldwide, meaning the hardware is complete and simply awaiting Apple’s official release window.

Completing the M5 MacBook Pro Transition

Apple began the M5 rollout back in October with the introduction of the base M5 MacBook Pro, bringing the new architecture to the lower end of the lineup. However, professional users have been waiting for the higher-core-count variants that truly unlock the platform’s potential.

Supply chain reports had accurately forecast this staggered launch, with M5 Pro and M5 Max systems expected in early 2026. If this report holds, Apple is right on schedule.

Studio Display Inventory Also Tightening

MacBook Pros aren’t the only Apple products showing signs of strain. Apple’s entry-level Studio Display is also becoming harder to find both online and in stores.

While a replacement is reportedly in development, Gurman notes it’s not expected to ship immediately. When it does arrive later in the first half of the year, earlier reports suggest Apple could finally modernize the display with:

  • ProMotion refresh rates
  • Mini-LED backlighting

Such upgrades would address long-standing complaints about the current 60Hz panel.

M5 MacBook Air Likely Not Far Behind

On the consumer side, the M4 MacBook Air remains widely available—but not for long. Gurman notes that an M5 update for the MacBook Air is “not far off,” signaling that Apple intends to move its entire portable Mac lineup onto the same processor generation in short order.

That would simplify Apple’s silicon roadmap and give buyers a clearer performance baseline across laptops.

A Busy Start to 2026 for the Mac

If Apple does launch the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros in the coming weeks, it would mark a strong opening to 2026 for the Mac—one focused on performance, efficiency, and AI-ready hardware rather than dramatic redesigns.

For professionals who skipped the base M5 model and have been holding out for more power, the wait may finally be almost over.
