Apple Once Considered Pink and Yellow AirPods — Here’s Why They Never Happened

For as long as AirPods have existed, they’ve come in just one color: white. It’s a look that’s become instantly recognizable and deeply tied to Apple’s brand. But according to newly surfaced images, Apple once explored a very different—and much more colorful—direction.

Photos shared by prototype collector Kosutami reveal early AirPods charging case shells in bright pink and yellow. These weren’t random experiments either. According to the collector, the colors were intentionally designed to match the vibrant aesthetic of the iPhone 5c.

The glossy finish and bold hues mirror the iPhone 5c’s polycarbonate back almost perfectly, suggesting Apple once envisioned AirPods as colorful lifestyle accessories rather than neutral tech products.

Why the Timing Still Makes Sense

Interestingly, the iPhone 5c launched several years before the original AirPods debuted in 2016. But Apple is well known for exploring product ideas far ahead of release—sometimes years in advance—testing designs, materials, and concepts that may never see the light of day.

These prototypes likely came from an early phase where Apple was still deciding what AirPods should represent visually.

Why Apple Chose White Instead

In the end, Apple went with a single, clean white finish—and it paid off. White AirPods became instantly recognizable, standing out in public without logos or branding. They also avoided fashion cycles, aging far more gracefully than trend-driven colors might have.

That decision still holds today.

  • All in-ear AirPods models remain white
  • Color options are reserved for AirPods Max
  • Beats continues to serve users who want bold color choices

Even the latest generations, including AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3, follow the same white-only approach.

A Rare Glimpse Into Apple’s Design Process

These abandoned pink and yellow AirPods are a reminder that Apple’s final products are often the result of countless experiments—and many paths not taken. While the colorful versions never shipped, they offer a fascinating look at how close AirPods came to being something very different.

Sometimes, the most interesting Apple stories are the ones hidden in the prototypes drawer.
