Apple Expands Emergency SOS via Satellite to Mexico
Share
Apple has officially launched Emergency SOS via satellite in Mexico, extending its life-saving technology to users of the iPhone 14 and newer models, including the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and the Apple Watch Ultra 3. The service allows users to contact emergency services even when outside cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.
How Emergency SOS via Satellite Works
The feature guides users to point their device toward a satellite, after which a short questionnaire is completed. The iPhone then sends a compressed message containing:
-
Location and altitude
-
Battery level
-
Medical ID information
Apple-trained specialists receive the message and relay it to local emergency services, helping coordinate assistance in critical situations. Since its debut with the iPhone 14, Apple reports that the service has already saved multiple lives.
Why Mexico Benefits from the Service
Juan Antonio Suárez Sánchez, head of the National Information Center, highlighted the importance of the technology in Mexico:
“In a country as geographically diverse as Mexico, there are remote regions where traditional mobile coverage can be limited. Emergency SOS via satellite offers a new and powerful way for people to get in touch with public emergency services when other means of communication are not available.”
This expansion is particularly significant for remote and mountainous areas, where conventional mobile networks may be sparse or unreliable.
Additional Features and Availability
Emergency SOS via satellite is free for two years when activating a compatible Apple device. The service requires iOS 18.4 or later and watchOS 26.0.1.
Mexico now joins a growing list of countries offering satellite connectivity, including:
-
United States
-
Canada
-
Australia
-
Japan
-
Much of Europe
Apple also rolled out Messages via satellite and Find My via satellite in the region, enabling users to send non-emergency texts and share locations with friends and family when off the grid. These services are powered through a partnership with satellite network operator Globalstar.
A Lifeline for Remote Users
With Emergency SOS via satellite, Apple continues to enhance its devices’ safety and emergency capabilities, making it possible to call for help even in the most isolated locations. For adventurers, travelers, and residents in rural areas, the feature represents a critical safety upgrade.
