iPad Pro to Get Dual Front Cameras for Portrait and Landscape Use, Says Gurman

Apple’s next iPad Pro is about to get a major usability upgrade: two front-facing cameras, one for portrait mode and one for landscape, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

In his latest newsletter, Gurman reports that the upcoming M5 iPad Pro will feature an additional camera positioned on the portrait edge of the device—joining the existing one on the landscape side introduced with the M4 iPad Pro.

Why It Matters

When Apple shifted the FaceTime camera to the landscape edge earlier this year, it was a win for users who dock their iPads with a Magic Keyboard. But for those using the iPad in portrait mode, it made things awkward—Face ID often failed to register properly, and video calls could feel off-center.

Adding a second camera solves that problem, allowing for a more seamless experience regardless of orientation.

A Bit of iPad History

This isn’t the first time Apple has considered dual-orientation hardware. Back in 2010, the original iPad was reportedly going to feature two 30-pin dock connectors—one for each orientation. That idea was ultimately scrapped by Steve Jobs.

Fortunately, this new dual-camera setup will be far less noticeable, with both cameras discreetly embedded in the black bezel.

What’s Next?

The dual-camera iPad Pro is expected to arrive before the end of 2025, powered by Apple’s upcoming M5 chip. Apple is said to be in advanced testing, so an official announcement could come as early as this fall.

This upgrade—paired with the rumored OLED display and AI enhancements—could make the iPad Pro the most versatile iPad yet.
